Thankfully, he was already sitting down when I arrived, five fashionable minutes late.
I dropped my bag on the couch and leaned down to kiss him twice on alternate cheeks in a very Greek way. In a very Greek way, he got up half-way to receive it.
‘You haven’t been waiting long?” I asked.
“Not at all. Where do you want to sit?” he said. I had a choice. Squeeze in next to him on the couch or sit on the chair opposite him. I chose the latter.
“Did you feel the earthquake last night?” I said as I sat down.
“Oh my god! Yes!”
“It was a big one, right?”
“And it lasted for ages.”
“I know!”
Just like that, the ice was broken. (Thank you, Mother Nature. Seriously. Thank you.)
Just like that, for the next two hours, we did not stop talking. For the next two hours, we did not take our eyes off each other. He was all I could see; all I could hear. Our respective mobile phones nowhere to be seen on the table, as if everything that was important was right there. And suddenly, that one thing that we use to stay connected was obsolete. Because finally, we were connecting.
There was no bar between us. No other customers to distract him. No friends to distract me.
But, there was still a table between us; his impending departure between us. It was discussed. At length. But still feels completely unspoken between us.
At the two hour mark, I walked him to work. We walked together along the same streets that I walk alone everyday. For his every step, I had to take three.
Yet somehow we were, finally, moving at the same pace.
